Caterpillar // Glass City of Us

about

Directed towards the possibilities for synthesis and sound design that could come from carefully harvested record skips, I found a wonderful place to start compositions from; such was the case with ‘Caterpillar’. Originally titled: Shinjuku-Shibuya, I was reminded of the sound of the train I took often when living in the area. Housed with the futurism of the suspend major 9ths, the record skips processed though automated reverbs convey an oscillation of different physical spaces. Just as one would feel on a train and subway as it passes through, over and under different structures. Like leaves of the undergrowth and forest floor of the city, small creatures go about their business- all the while deeply aware of the environments. ‘Caterpillar’ is a poem I wrote on the train at this time, and the feeling from the piece of music brought back the memory of that part of the vast metropolis.

Most of Glass City of Us was written and produced at different times, it would be much later in the process that I would realize that I had an album, Objects + Particles was the same. That which did not become the finished tracks on that one, became the bed tracks and building blocks for Glass City of Us. Both were composed and completed within the same time periods of 2003-2006.
